1999“Ladi's Vineyard” Inspirations

This wine
is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, both of which were
harvested from Ladi’s Vineyard in Sonoma County. The finished wine
is comprised of the harder pressings from two lots of juice from the 1999
vintage. Each individual lot went straight into new French barrels where
they completed both Primary and Malolactic fermentation.
The wines
remained in barrel for over 20 months. They were blended together just
prior to bottling. Minimal interference and sulphur were used during their
time in barrel, so each wine was allowed to evolve its own personal characteristics.
The intention was always to blend these wines together and make a special
cuvee for the memory of Dr Robert Byck.The wine was affectionately known
as ‘Bob’s Blend’ throughout its creation, but due to commercial
viability it was not bottled as such.
This wine
offers all the seriousness and backbone of the Cabernet grape combined
perfectly with the softness and richness of Syrah—so complexity is
an apt descriptor. This unusual blend works well, for when tasting it
you are never quite sure where one flavor and influence begins and the
other ends and ‘visa versa’ The wine has a wonderful tannin
structure and a good lengthy finish, which should make it a great candidate
for aging. If you have the patience to allow this, the wine will further
evolve and become even more intriguing.
