Hedi k. Ernst Schmid  is a Swiss artist who has studied and worked in the United States and Europe.  A student of both Viola Frey and Raymond Saunders, she both paints and sculpts.  She holds two degrees from the California  College of Arts and Crafts where she has also taught.

“Souls of the Heads”, in its many parts, reflects the wedding of a complex matrix of influences.  Oceanic and African iconography have been filtered through a distinctly western European sensibility and melded with the candidness of California Funk.  We are presented with images that dramatically suggest the epic sweep of Teutonic myths and yet mirror the timeless mysteries of the soul.
