PENNY MICHEL |

Penny
Michel grew up in the Mediterranean worlds of northern Africa and
Italy. She holds degrees
from the California College of Arts and Crafts and Western Illinois
University. Michel’s biomorphic forms reflect the history of both ancient and modern art. Richly diverse references to the works of Medardo Rosso, Max Ernst and Dubuffet all come to mind. The lava-like surfaces of these figures contain them in a suggestive penumbra of timelessness. They are fixed in an organic specificity between the nature of the materials used and the desires of the artist. Their anatomy suggests the profound vulnerability of the human heart and flesh. Their spirit reflects the fleeting brevity of our time, our mortality. |
